Recently read Paul Trynka's Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed. The mercifully brief pre-encore calm was punctured by 'Penetration', which heralded a five-track burst that seemed to be petering out with 'Open Up And Bleed'. As the Stooges kicked into the opening chords of “Open Up And Bleed” for their final number, Iggy swung his mic cord wildly around himself, tying up his body like a strait jacket. Naturally I knew who Iggy Pop was (the old guy who never wore a shirt) but I mainly new him from movies, oddly enough. I found out this spring as people read the recent biography, "Iggy Pop. The screenplay for the film was written by Robin French and based largely on Paul Trynka's books Starman and Open Up and Bleed, which look at Bowie and Pop's lives respectively. Okay, and I am now afraid of (and for) Iggy in many ways. Open Up and Bleed: Iggy & The Stooges actually performing '1970' in 1970! French is adapting major sources such as Bowie's biography (Starman) and the Iggy bio written by former Mojo Magazine editor Paul Trynka, the candidly written and titled Open Up And Bleed. Paul Trynka uses this concept in his book, "Open Up and Bleed" and I felt that it was the same old cliché carted out again. Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed by Paul Trynka was an awesome read. Enjoy a video of each version of the classic track below. Then, he appears perfectly impressed with the band's handiwork – but, as soon as The Stooges kick into “Open Up And Bleed,” the singer spontaneously gets wound back up and shoots to thrill some more. Talk about a fun family tidbit.
